For the urban natural girl, she wants pureness in her home. Natural fabrics of linens & cottons, and fresh & flirty chairs with an organic sensibility. So, when it comes to true green ~ she wants the facts without sacrificing innovative styling and pure beauty. It's about Balance. And one winning sustainable combination comes from LEE Industries + BiOH.

What's inside this winning combination of NaturalLEE + BiOH: seat cushions made of Preserve® foam core with fiber wraps in a 100% cotton down proof ticking. The Preserve foam replaces 20% of the petroleum-based ingredients with a renewable soy-based BiOH polyol. The fibers are 80% regenerated fibers. Regenerated fibers consist of virgin fibers and waste fibers that are added with a binder fiber. This reduces the amount of waste that would normally go into our nation’s landfills.

Earth-Friendly Efforts Long Before it Became "Status Quo." ~ LEE

The NaturalLEE story: this fashion-forward upholstery manufacturer lovingly combines eco-technology with creative chic styling. Their commitment to sustainably is evident in their use of FSC certified woods and the green-choice to use BiOH cushions as their standard in all LEE products.
"Most importantly, sustainability is more than offering an eco-friendly product. We manufacture long-lasting furniture, made in the USA. The longevity of our furniture prevents it from being discarded into landfills, leaving a smaller environmental footprint on our Earth." ~ the LEE family.

Other feel good news about LEE: As part of their commitment toward a better future, one tree will be donated to American Forests® for every piece of NaturalLEE furniture sold. Now that, is true organic goodness. Make sure to see their amazing + extensive collection of eco-fabulous frames at www.leeindustries.com. {lifestyle photo: lee upholstery at domino magazine.}

BiOH: For the love of ~ Soy Love
The BiOH Story: this company makes me feel good. Although, everyone wants to get into the green movement, the green road is not as easy as it looks. True innovation + change comes with time and commitment and BiOH is leading the way in changing how manufacturers make upholstered furniture. Consumers need to understand the "shades of green" in terms of sustainability and need to make informed choices in how to purchase home interior goods. Leslie Carothers, social media strategist of BiOH states:
"BiOH soy based foams are a more responsible choice for the consumer on the continuum of choice but not the greenest choice, as foam made with BiOH soy polyols is a combination of soy and petrol. At this time, only 20% max of any cushion or mattress can contain soy because the technology does not exist to make a cushion that meets the manufacturer’s specifications for comfort".
The Good News: the pricing of upholstery made with BiOH soy cushions will not cost the consumer any more than making a choice to buy an all foam sofa and this makes the green-choice a whole lot easier. All you have to do is ask your retail sales consultant, "Which upholstery manufacturers do you carry use BiOH? It feels good to be green.

The Technology of it: What are BiOH® Polyols?

"We guess that you’re probably asking that question since “polyol” is not a word that most people use everyday, and we know that the majority of our family and friends still don’t completely understand what we do!" ~ the BiOH family.
BiOH polyols are an ingredient for flexible foam in products you use daily: upholstered furniture, mattresses, mattress toppers, pillows, carpet cushion, and automotive seats. Traditional foam and carpet cushion ingredients are made from petroleum-based chemicals. BiOH polyols are made from a renewable resource ~ soybean oil. (See the Soy Love section.) Today BiOH polyols cannot replace all of the petroleum chemicals in these products, but they are leading the industry.

Back to Basics with Urban Loft + Organic living. Of course, any lifestyle can have organic & sustainable elements and manufacturers, but I do try to weed out the true-green from the green-washers. The good news, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. So support the independents who are making a difference, who are on the road to change, and who have passion for sustainable design. {lifestyle photo: courtesy of ny times home & garden}.

A different side of Ligne Roset is ~ Urban. With clean lines and solid wood, comes Eaton: a perfect urban loft dining table fit for any open space. It comes with a special oil treated, matte finish in Walnut, Natural Maple Ebony Oak, or Cherry Oak and is also available in 9 different lengths to fit even the most grand of dwellings. {visit: www.ligne-roset-usa.com}.

The Platform Bed from the innovative LAX Series by Mash Studios, utilizes the sleek clean lines of English Walnut to create simple beauty. Founded in 2002 by Bernard Brucha, this team of highly skilled designers, engineers and architects work together to execute environments that are both conceptually interesting and structurally precise. The Brooklyn Boys are Back. Uhuru: the über cool of urban organic. Founded in 2004 by Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath, this is one of the most unique small design + build furniture companies on the planet. These guys know their wood slabs and are truly devoted to sustainability issues.
"For us sustainability is about choosing materials with the least amount of environmental impact, whether it is what they are made of, how they are produced or where they come from, and using them in a way where little to no waste is created."
The Bilge Lounge Chair is crafted by using reclaimed bourbon barrel staves from Kentucky and used truck springs. This chair is ~ true green.

Another organic find from Uhuru's Küpe line, is the Stave Bench {above}, which is constructed from reclaimed bourbon barrel staves and black steel. By utilizing functional design, while retaining the individual characteristics and natural colors of the aged wood from the original barrels, the team at Uhuru easily create a new vernacular in craftsmanship. One more of my favorite, NY build + design furniture companies, is John Houshmand: the grand-daddy of all things Urban Organic. His philosophy for this industry is refreshing, not to mention, his profound thoughts on trees:
"Trees are the guardians of everything sacrosanct. They hold secrets of the past and relinquish everything necessary to sustain the future. We allow trees to do the talking. We simply listen."
This 96" long organic console pictured above by John Houshmand is a great anchor piece for any loft. Made from old growth heart pine beams and a steel frame, this piece signifies the urban industrial ideal. Each piece is individually handcrafted ~ they love crumbling bark & wormholes.

The 2-fold Spalted Maple Table is just one of his low-profile coffee tables and with its unique scale, it fits any urban loft's sensibilities. The homogeneity of the wood varies with each piece, leaving you with a one-of-a-kind piece of organic art. If you have not done so already, you have to check out his amazing website at www.johnhoushmand.com.

Aside from being totally laid back & urber cool, these guys live & breathe urban organic. From their Red Hook, Brooklyn studio, this small design + build furniture company, create utilitarian designs out of just about anything: reclaimed pine from demolished NYC buildings, old bicycle rims, recycled steel and other "such attractive waste."

The Slab Dining Table is handcrafted from large wood slabs of English Elm from sustainably harvested trees, ~ no two are alike and they keep plenty of slabs in stock for custom orders. Check out this eco-friendly bunch at www.uhurudesign.com.

Only with redefined, understated glamour, comes the beauty of Hudson Furniture Inc. Designed by Barlas Baylar, the "Knight Base Table" combines an organic Claro Walnut Slab top, with a free-form handmade sculpted base of cast bronze, which is then hand polished like a fine piece of jewelry. Their "Candles & Spirits" chandelier comes in a Gloss Nickel Finish and is the perfect topper for the most sophisticated of guests.

Catering to the upscale crowd and made in New York City, all pieces are available in custom dimensions and custom finishes in a variety of wood species, such as Claro Walnut, Black Walnut, Jasmine, and Ebonized Pine. You can find these urban beauties, and other pieces of organic jewelry at www.hudsonfurnitureinc.com.

Another great find from Hudson Furniture is this large scale, solid walnut dining table. By appreciating the natural grains and rugged lines of the wood slabs and while maintaining the integrity of traditional joinery techniques, this Claro Table is a hand-made, one of a kind, piece of Organic Art.

Since Hudson caters to the design community, you may have a custom table built up to 20-feet in length, which also comes with a custom designed metal base. What more could you want from a high-end furniture company?

And...one more reason to love this NYC company, "None of the woods we use are harvested from old growth forests. With respect to nature, all wood slabs are domestically sourced from either salvaged trees or storm damaged trees." For more Urban Industrial Art, check out www.hudsonfurnitureinc.com.

Live Edge: the freedom in organic form by Urban Hardwoods. Each piece uniquely hand-crafted and selected from salvaged trees by design + build artisans, who for the love of their craft, create one-of-a-kind, feel-good, organic decor.

Urban Hardwoods: the Seattle Guardians of Green Decor. This creative and innovative design company is now considered one of the leaders in the "Re-discovered Wood Movement," and was judged to be one of the Top Ten Green Building Products by Sustainable Industries for 2008. The company's philosophy, based on "creative thinking with environmental modernism," results in true organic, sustainable craftsmanship.
"We know where the tree grew. We take responsibility for its second life and are proud of our work." ~ Design Team at Urban Hardwoods.

The Alternative: wood captured + caged.

Do you know the Chain of Custody of your Home Decor wood products?

What it really means to be salvaged and why I love this sustainable furniture manufacturer, is their creative approach and principles when it comes to sourcing salvaged woods. The Urban Hardwoods Chain of Custody: from a neighbor's yard to our Seattle Showroom, we handle every aspect of the process: saw milling, stacking, kiln drying, furniture design, and construction is all done under one roof.

"Made in Seattle from trees that would have been discarded, each piece is unique. The color and figure of the wood, the touch of the craftsman's hand, the shape and size can never be duplicated". ~ UH

The Goods + The Woods: made from an eclectic mix of salvaged massive slabs of pacific madrone, sycamore, walnut, elm, and other trees that have spent their lifetimes in Seattle. For over ten years, Urban Hardwoods has been rescuing trees lost to disease, each slab comes with a unique story to tell.
"With every piece we craft, we respect the natural character and imperfections of the tree we use. We let the natural shapes, holes, curves and “live edges” of the tree remain".

The Little Story of the Oldest Elm Tree in West Seattle: by Urban Hardwoods
During the summer of 2006 one of the oldest Elm trees in West Seattle died. Urban Hardwoods was there to save her for a second life. The dining room is waiting for a table from the tree that grew less than 20 feet away. Had Urban Hardwoods not been involved, this Elm would have met the same fate too many historic trees in Seattle endure ~ the landfill. Instead, thoughtfully milled and carefully stacked in our 'green room,' the 130-year-old Elm dried slowly and naturally for two more years.
